Spine Surgery Team at Hebei Medical University Hospital Successfully Performs Annulus Fibrosus Suturing Assisted by Large Channel Technique

Recently, the Spine Surgery Department at Hebei Medical University Hospital, led by Associate Chief Physician Dr. Wei Wang, successfully performed an annulus fibrosus suturing procedure assisted by a large channel technique. This innovative surgery combines the advantages of the large channel approach with precise annulus fibrosus repair, offering patients dual benefits: effective lesion removal and accurate annulus repair. The procedure not only provides a faster-recovery, lower-recurrence treatment option for lumbar disc herniation patients but also marks a significant advancement in the hospital’s minimally invasive spine surgery capabilities.

Case Overview

The patient, a 67-year-old female, presented with right lower limb pain for seven days. Symptoms appeared spontaneously and did not improve with oral medication. Physical examination revealed normal spinal alignment, tenderness and percussion pain in the lumbar region radiating to the right lower limb, sensory abnormalities in the right leg, and preserved muscle strength in both lower limbs. CT imaging showed L5/S1 disc protrusion with posterior calcification, L4/5 disc bulging, lumbar degenerative changes, and sacralization of L5. The final diagnosis was lumbar disc herniation with sciatica, with the responsible segment identified as L4/5.

Surgical Procedure and Outcome

After thorough evaluation, Dr. Wang and his team performed an L4/5 nucleus pulposus removal combined with annulus fibrosus suturing via large channel assistance. The surgery proceeded smoothly, and the patient experienced significant symptom relief postoperatively, expressing high satisfaction with the outcome.
